Pittsburgh secured a commanding 39-7 victory over Detroit at home on October 23, improving to 7-1 on the season while maintaining a perfect 3-0 division record. Head coach Eric Hess’s team extended their winning streak to four games with a balanced offensive attack and strong defensive plays.

Pittsburgh took an early lead in the first quarter with a blocked punt by Joe Cave, returning two points and setting the tone for the game. Fullback Jeremy Gonzales capped the opening quarter with a seven-yard touchdown run, giving Pittsburgh a 9-0 advantage after Michael Turner's successful extra point.

The offense continued to click in the second quarter, with quarterback Joe Lockwood connecting with Timothy Baker for a four-yard touchdown. Baker was a key contributor throughout the game, recording 73 receiving yards and a rushing touchdown. Leon Kline also added a four-yard rushing touchdown later in the quarter, pushing the lead to 23-0.

Turner added a 45-yard field goal before halftime, allowing Pittsburgh to enter the break up 26-0. On defense, Robert Melton intercepted a Detroit pass late in the second quarter, halting their best scoring opportunity.

Detroit scored their lone touchdown on a 103-yard kickoff return in the third quarter by Alvin Clark, narrowing the score to 26-6 after the extra point. However, Pittsburgh's defense forced a second interception in the third quarter and limited Detroit’s offense to just 93 passing yards and 17 rushing yards.

Running backs Charles Lewis and David Thurman provided strong performances on the ground, combining for 217 rushing yards and one receiving touchdown by Lewis. Lockwood completed 24 of 31 passes for 217 yards and two touchdowns, despite one interception.

Detroit’s offense struggled to find rhythm throughout the game under head coach Bobby Luton, managing only seven points on the board with two interceptions and one forced fumble. Pittsburgh’s defense recorded three sacks and recovered one fumble.

Pittsburgh faced minimal penalties with three for 23 yards and showed efficiency in ball control, completing all rushing attempts for touchdowns and capitalizing on turnover opportunities.

With this victory, Pittsburgh solidifies its position atop the division and moves closer to clinching a playoff berth. Detroit falls to 5-3 on the season, now facing a two-game losing streak.

Pittsburgh will look to maintain momentum heading into Week 9 as they seek to continue their dominant run under Eric Hess’s leadership.
