Although SD has prevailed most of the time, NE and SD have had many epic battles over the course of 10 seasons. None illustrates how tough these games have been as the one played today. Playing into OT, both teams combined for 88 points, 1128 net yards in offense, and 774 gross passing yards.
Here is the scoring summary for the last few minutes of the game:
(Qtr 4) San Diego: 4-2-NED 18 (1:49) 17-Allen Senior 37 yard field goal is GOOD. SDO 38 NED 33
(SD THOUGHT IT HAD PUT THIS GAME AWAY. THEN, ELEVEN SECONDS LATER, NE SCORES ON A PASS (WITH A LONG YAC) TO SEEMINGLY PUT THE GAME AWAY FOR NE. ADD A 2 PT CONVERSION, AND THINGS LOOKED BLEAK FOR SD.)
(Qtr 4) New England: 1-10-NED 44 (1:38) 2-Greg Mack pass complete to 85-Thomas Powell for 56 yards. TOUCHDOWN! 2-Greg Mack pass complete to 81-Robert Lane for 2 yards. CONVERSION GOOD! SDO 38 NED 41
(STARTING AT ITS OWN 20 YD LINE, SD DROVE TO THE NE 39 YD LINE. THEN, WITH 3 SECONDS LEFT IN THE GAME, A MIRACLE 57 YD FG SENDS THE GAME INTO OT.)
Qtr 4) San Diego: 1-10-NED 39 (0:03) 17-Allen Senior 57 yard field goal is GOOD. SDO 41 NED 41
(AFTER STOPPING NE AT MIDFIELD IN OT AND STARTING AT ITS OWN THIRTEEN YD LINE, SD MOUNTS AN 87 YD DRIVE FOR THE WIN! (Amazingly, SD foregoes a game winning FG when it was well within field goal range for three or four plays to ultimately score a TD on a short pass. The AI needs to be tweaked when the odds of kicking a game winning FG in OT are high other than risking a turnover.)
(OT) San Diego: 1-2-NED 2 (7:26) 8-Joseph Hill pass complete to 14-William Hobbs for 2 yards. TOUCHDOWN!
Great game to watch. Kudos and well-played once again, Morbid. This game was almost as good as our 51-48 overtime game in the 2018 Conference Championship game.
