No kidding, that was a lot of **** for a 1st rounder...weird that the champ would basically give away his first pick.
Now that we're through the draft and training camp, here are my thoughts about the trade and my response to your criticism of it.
It's important to note that after examining the players available in the draft, I really thought only a couple would fill a pressing need. I also thought they were not likely to be available at 1.32. In hindsight, I was right.
Please also note I am a huge proponent of building a deep bench to help with situational substitutions and keeping your starters fresh. For instance, roughly speaking and assuming that their bars are in the right place, I would rather have 2 players rated 65 instead of one rated 75 and another rate 55. (Being relatively new to the game, I still struggle with trying to give equal playing time where players are basically interchangeable, but that is my ultimate goal.)
Furthermore, a 1.32 draft choice is low enough that you can't be sure you're going to get a star player. In fact, the three players drafted at 1.32 in our league's history are currently rated 68/72 (3rd year), 65/76 (2nd year), and 35/63 (1st year). Of those, I think only one hasn't yet peaked in terms of future rating. Admittedly, those ratings are based on my own edited weight system, but I don't think they vary wildly from the default weight system.
As to the specific trade in question, the two players I obtained from the 49ers for my 1.32 were an undrafted rookie free agent LT whom I rated at 52/73 and a rookie FS drafted in the 5th round whom I rated 53/66. More importantly, each had bars that I would find useful for my game plan. The real risk, of course, was whether either or both the acquired players' future ratings would hold up.
Flash forward. I now have two second year players who appear to be good a fit for my roster and are potential starters. The LT is now rated a 56/74 (+4/+1) after training camp and the S is now rated a 58/69 (+5/+4) after training camp. No matter how you look at it, both are valuable to me. More important than their overall ratings, I like both players' respective bars.
When you add that I also received a future 3rd round draft choice which might net another valuable role player (or even a starter), I don't feel I was on the shorter end of the stick.
That's not to denigrate the Niners who drafted 1.32. I'm sure that the player drafted fits their needs and the players given up in return were probably surplus insofar as their ability to further Niners' game plan (although not guaranteed to be released). Moreover, to receive a 1.32 for two unproven players, one of whom was not even drafted, represents a pretty good return on investment, Nevertheless, I am happy with the results and would do the trade again.
Best of luck to everyone this season!
